Isla de Jambeli

This morning, I arrived in the town of Machala, reputed for its banana and seafood exports-- but not much else--, and wasn't particularly thrilled. So I hopped on to a bus to visit the island of Jambeli. It is a tiny, mangrove and beach-filled isle that is unfortunately facing destruction of its habitat. There I met a semi-local, who showed me the sights. A sprawling beach. More hammacks than I have ever feasted my eyes upon. Fresh coco juice. Whale bones. Wooden bungalows hidden in the jungle. Empty cafes. And, especially, a slow, sun-drenched pace of life.

View on the way home.

Before the swim.

Me and my friend the whale.

Very little movement registered on the tranquil isle.

And then the coco drink materialized...
