Cuenca

I'm spending the weekend in Cuenca, a peaceful, beautiful and very religious city that is now the third largest in Ecuador. It's known for its churches. And churches. And more churches. But it's colonial architecture is also gorgeous. During the 90s, there was a significant immigrant exodus from Cuenca to the United States-- and it was nicknamed the 'city of women' as they remained when the men left. From my unscientific observations, parity seems to have been reached once again. The slow rumble of this city is a striking switch from Quito's never-ending bustle-- but a welcome one.

The main church of the city.

The river running through Cuenca.

Nuns in front of the major church.

Flowers are on of Ecuador's main exports.

Cloister.
