Ecuadorian psyche

Alexander Von Himboldt, a famed Andean explorer of Prussian origin, has a very powerful quote concerning Ecuadorians:

LOS ECUATORIANOS SON SERES RAROS Y UNICOS: DUERMEN TRANQUILOS EN MEDIO DE RUGIENTES VOLCANES, VIVEN POBRES EN MEDIO DE INCOMPARABLES RIQUEZAS Y SE LEGRAN CON MUSICA TRISTE’

Feebly translated: Ecuadorians are strange and unique beings: they sleep peacefully in the center of roaring volcanoes, they live poor among incomparable wealth and they become happy listening to sad music.

For a little context, said adventurer explored Ecuador between
1799-1805. But, as several citizens agreed, his quote is still generally applicable-- volcanoes continue to rumble, Andean poverty remains unfortunately widespread and every song's aim seems to be soggy cheeks.
