Malaria isn't plaguing Ecuador, but backpackeritis is.
Symptoms:
- Visual: Baggy pants, flip flops, multiple piercings, at least one dreadlock, a tan and/or sunburns.
- Cultural: Appears to principally affect Norwegians, Germans and Brits. But it knows no borders.
-Oral: If you hear "this one time, when I was hiking Machu Picchu" or "so I had already paid 20 cents for my room when the rats..."-- be wary, be very wary.
- Places of contamination: Shabby hostels, cheap internet cafes, any NGO, laundromats.
Length of illness: Said to be 12 months, colloquially referred to as a "gap year." Said "gap year" is highly extendable-- gap life?
