The wheels on the bus

As of yet, I've been fairly impressed by the bus service in Ecuador-- clean and timely, the two crucial points. But what is truly impressive is the quality of the entertainment. And, no, I don't mean films-- the only movie I was ever inflicted was a badly dubbed American war film with an average of 23 strangulations per minute. No, the entertainment I'm talking about is live! I'm continuously stunned as vendors leap into the bus at every red light. They sell everything from the easy-- gum-- to the a little more noticeable-- bananas-- to the frankly incongruous-- today a woman jumped on selling steaming rice and chicken. Also amusing is the "bus assistant" whose job it is to load up luggage. The vast majority of them also seem to specialize in defying rationality-- they often end up running alongside the bus before heaving themselves in right before a jammed crossroads. And last, but definitely not least, are the sceneries. Here is a snap from today's bus ride from Cuenca to Machala. Probably my most entrancing 4 hour trip to date.
