Today, I decided to trust my Petit Fute-- the French equivalent of Lonely Planet. It told me to visit the small village of Guaseco, which is, according to the Petit Fute, THE place to be on Sundays in this region, due to its market. Well. I'm not sure I would put it quite that way. It was indeed lovely. It was completely authentic. I only saw one other tourist. I went to five cafes before finding one that had ANY non-meat dishes. There were no seats on the hour-long bus back to Cuenca, though habit has made me fond of dominating all the potholes of Ecuadorian roads while standing up in an aisle. I'm not sure it is a must in Ecuador, but it was refreshing to escape the backpacker-beaten path I've travelled on a fair amount.
A few of my favourite stalls:
Omelette heaven.
